Our “Beginners” Hikes

What to expect of hikes which are announced for “beginners” and “less experienced hikers” organised by Gaia Adventures?

We assume that when you joined the Gaia Adventures, you were looking for something else than just walking a few laps around the park. Gaia Adventures offers you more challenging and more adventurous hikes in which you can participate.

Physical fitness is a prerequisite. Nothing is impossible, but you will make it much harder for yourself and your companions if you’re not fit. Your stamina and endurance however will only be built up and increase by participating and pushing your limits bit by bit. In this manner you will not only become physically stronger, but mentally as well. Trust me…

During normal hikes, the participants follow their own pace and it’s a normal phenomenon to see smaller groups appear or even individuals walking alone. Some people are left behind and call it quits; they return to the cars or left the hike. This cannot be avoided. Not everybody is mentally up to the challenge, especially if they have to face the it completely on their own or with another peer who’s struggling.

When we mention “beginners” – please note the inverted commas – special attention will be given to those who need or want it. We’ll make it a point that we will do all within our means to assist you in reaching the target of the hike (a summit, a waterfall, etc.). In short, you’re not alone and you won’t be left behind.

That doesn’t necessarily means that these are easy hikes. On the contrary. Staying within your comfort zone will never transform you into a more experienced hiker. But… these hikes can be done by someone with almost no hiking experiences. They are the type of hikes you would probably never dare to commence on your own. So here’s your chance.

Depending on the degree of difficulty, we will provide you with a list of recommendations. This advice should not be taken lightly. You will definitely learn more by facing reality and experiencing things on your own than by following recommendations, but it can help you to avoid discomfort.

Always read the write-up posting of the hike you want to attend very carefully and have a closer look at its rating so you have an idea of what to expect. More info on the rating system can be found in our rating page.

Besides the classical hiking tips, please note the following:  (please pay attention to this part of the information if we request you to do so in our event posting)

  • wear shoes with profile (a pattern on the soles to prevent slipping and gliding); adidas kampung is okay to start with…
  • rain gear is recommended
  • swimming gear and a towel – if you have a float/life jacket, bring it along
  • we have to cross a few small streams which can be done without taking off the shoes
  • a pair of gloves doesn’t weigh that much (thorns, roots, trees, mud)
  • bring enough drinks and snacks (carbohydrates). For this trip isotonic drinks are not a luxury. Dried fruits are preferred over chocolate… Proper nutrition will be a key to your success!
  • leech protection will be advisable
  • please be responsible and don’t litter – be sure not to leave any rubbish along the track and at the waterfalls
